Utter types

The main risk is that the migration takes longer than a weekend, so we should plan a fallback where the old system stays read-only.

Talking through a first draft is quicker than typing it. Edit it with the keyboard afterwards.

Time saved

How much time does it save?

At 1,000 words a day of email, docs and notes, typing at 40 words a minute and speaking at 150, dictation saves about 18 minutes a day, or about 73 hours a year. Those numbers are assumptions. Change them below.

Saved a week1.5 h
Saved a year73 h
Worth a year$1,800
Work days to earn back $497

Saved time = words ÷ typing speed − words ÷ speaking speed. We count 5 working days a week and 48 weeks a year, and round to two figures. The defaults are assumptions, not measurements: put in your own. Time spent thinking about what to write stays the same either way.

FAQ

Questions

Does Utter add punctuation?

Yes. Utter adds punctuation and capitals, removes filler words like “um”, and keeps the sentence you meant when you correct yourself.

Which languages can I dictate in?

English and 24 other European languages with the default speech model (Parakeet V3), and 99 languages with Whisper. Utter detects the language you're speaking and switches model for you.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once you've downloaded a speech model, and a cleanup model if you want tidy-ups, Utter works without a connection.

What if the cleanup changes something I meant?

Every take keeps what you said, what Utter typed and the words that changed between them. If a cleanup went too far, rewrite the take in another style.
