The app
Utter records only while you hold its key, or after you double-press it for hands-free. Speech recognition and cleanup run on your computer. Your audio and text are never sent to us.
Takes (what you said and what Utter typed) are stored on your computer and deleted after the period you choose in Settings. Audio is kept only if you switch on “Save audio recordings”. The app never takes screenshots.
Utter uses the internet for four things:
- Downloading a model, when you click it. The download comes from Hugging Face.
- Activating and checking a licence. This sends us the licence key, a random ID for the computer and the computer's name (for example “MacBook Pro”), so you can see and remove your computers.
- Checking for a newer version when it starts. This asks our site for the latest version number. You can switch it off in Settings.
- A style you've set to use your own API key. That style's text goes to the address you entered, under that provider's terms.
This website
When you buy, Stripe handles your payment details. We keep your email address, the licence it bought and the payment record, so we can send your key, handle refunds and keep the records tax law requires.
If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address and nothing else. If you sign in with an emailed link or code, we keep a scrambled copy of the code for up to 15 minutes. Either way we use your email to find your licences, and we keep you signed in with one cookie for up to 30 days.
Your data
You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or to delete it, by emailing us. We keep payment records for as long as tax law requires, even after you ask us to delete the rest.
