Speed

You talk about three times faster than you type.

A common estimate is about 40 words a minute typing and 150 speaking. Utter has your words typed by the time your hand is back on the mouse.

Time saved

What does a week of dictation save you?

Put in your own numbers. The defaults are assumptions, kept on the modest side: 1,000 words a day and an hour of your time valued at $25.

Saved a week1.5 h
Saved a year73 h
Worth a year$1,800
Work days to earn back $497

Saved time = words ÷ typing speed − words ÷ speaking speed. We count 5 working days a week and 48 weeks a year, and round to two figures. The defaults are assumptions, not measurements: put in your own. Time spent thinking about what to write stays the same either way.

Clean text appears

Utter types it where your cursor is, in the tone that suits the app, and puts your clipboard back the way it was.

Use cases

What can you dictate with Utter?

Prompts, replies, email and notes. Pick the work closest to yours to see what you'd say and what Utter types.

History

See every word it changed.

Each take keeps what you said beside what Utter typed, with removed words struck through. Utter compares the two word by word in code, so the struck words are exactly the ones that changed. If a cleanup went too far, rewrite the take in another style.

Styles, words, snippets

Formal in Mail. Casual in Slack. Exact in your editor.

Utter picks a style from the app you're in, and spells names and jargon the way you do.

A style for every app

Each app gets a style. Set how much it tidies, the tone, and any instructions of your own.

The words you use

Add names, products and jargon once. Tell it “sequel” always means SQL. When you correct a take, Utter offers to learn the word.

Privacy

Your voice stays on your computer.

  • Speech recognition and cleanup run on your computer and keep working offline.
  • Your audio and the text you dictate are never sent to us, and Utter never takes screenshots.
  • Audio is thrown away after each take unless you turn on saving.
  • Want a cloud model for one style? Add your own API key, and only that style's text goes to the provider you picked.

Local or cloud

Should dictation run on your computer or in the cloud?

Both work. They trade off where your voice goes, what you download, and how much your computer has to do.

On your computer (how Utter works)

  • Your audio and text stay on the machine.
  • It works offline once a model is downloaded.
  • You download the models once: about 600 MB for speech and 1 to 2.5 GB for cleanup.
  • It uses your computer's memory. 8 GB is enough, and 16 GB runs the larger cleanup model.

In the cloud

  • Your audio goes to the provider's servers, and their policy decides what happens to it.
  • Every take needs an internet connection.
  • There's nothing large to download, so older computers cope.
  • The provider can run bigger models than fit on a laptop.

Utter lets you mix the two. Speech stays on your computer, and you can give one style your own API key if you want a cloud model to tidy its text. Only that style's text goes to the provider you picked.

FAQ

Before you download

What is Utter?

Utter is a dictation app for Mac, with Windows and Linux in beta. Hold a key (fn on a Mac), speak, and let go: Utter types the cleaned-up text into the app you're using. Speech recognition and cleanup run on your computer, so your voice and text stay there.

What happens after the year of updates?

Utter keeps working with unlimited words, for good. Versions released after your year ends need a renewal, which costs $29 and adds another year. You only pay if you want those versions. We never charge you automatically.

What counts toward the 2,000 free words?

Every word Utter types for you. The count starts again each Monday. Builds you compile yourself from the source code have no limit.

Does anything leave my computer?

Your voice and your text stay on it. Utter goes online to download a model when you click it, to check for a newer version, and to activate a licence, which sends the key, a random computer ID and the computer's name. If you give a style your own API key, that style's text goes to the provider you chose.

Do I need an account?

You can use Utter without one. Buyers can sign in on this site with Google to see their licence, renew it and manage their computers.

Which computers does it run on?

Macs with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 13 or later, Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), and Linux on X11 or Wayland. Windows and Linux are in beta. 8 GB of memory is enough. With 16 GB, Utter can run the larger cleanup model, which catches more.

How many computers can I use it on?

Three at a time. To move to a new one, remove the licence from the old computer in Settings › Licence, or from your account page here, then add it on the new one.

Which languages does it understand?

English and 24 other European languages with the default speech model, and 99 languages with Whisper Turbo. Utter detects the language you're speaking and switches to the model you've set for it.

I lost my licence key.

Sign in with Google using the email you bought with, or ask us to email the key to you from the “Lost your key?” page.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Ask within 30 days of buying and we'll refund you in full.

How is Utter different from Wispr Flow or Superwhisper?

Utter does all its work on your computer, shows you every word it changed, runs on Mac (with Windows and Linux in beta), and costs $49 once.

Say it once. It's typed.
